Definition¶
A counter-ion is an ion of opposite charge that associates with the peptide molecule to form a neutral salt. In peptide manufacturing, counter-ions are present as a result of the synthesis and purification process.

Peptides are typically manufactured as salts with a counter-ion. The most common counter-ions are trifluoroacetate (TFA, from HPLC purification) and acetate (from ion exchange). The counter-ion impacts molecular weight, solubility, and biological assay compatibility.
